My Fine Nine - Indiana's Covered Bridges

Westport Covered Bridge -- Decatur Co. 7/3/2010 (dwm) My list of favorite bridges is filled with a bunch of ties. Just to make it interesting, I chose 10% of Indiana's covered bridges for a fine nine . The Westport Covered Bridge was the covered bridge which started my search for all the bridges in the state. The Westport Bridge worked a good life, was demoted to foot traffic, then received a shot in the arm when locals restored it. They did very good work. Aqueduct Bridge, Franklin Co. 6/24/11 (dwm) It is the most unusual bridge ever... a bridge carrying water over water... the Aqueduct Covered Bridge . The bridge carries the Whitewater canal over Duck Creek. Mid 19th century the canal was the highway of choice - they were dug across states to connect one river to another. One of the reasons they didn't last long was they couldn't handle a lot of traffic. There was room for a few passengers or perhaps a small load of cargo....

Michigan Lights - St Joseph and New Buffalo

St Joseph range lights 9/18/2017 dwm photo New Buffalo is actually the first lighthouse after crossing from Indiana into Michigan, but as my former editors might remind me, that would bury the lead. St. Joseph deserves the top of the blog. When we found a place to park, I checked the electronic parking attendant. The only options were paying for a half-day or whole-day. The lot was nearly empty, and I wouldn't be there a half-hour, so I worked fast. My loss, I didn't walk the pier toward the lights. Joined on the beach by a guy with a metal detector, the second light caught my attention when it came into view. Together the two become range lights. In addition to identifying a safe harbor to boats on the water, the two offer specific instructions. Looking at the lights from the right angle, the lights of the front and lower light will line up exactly with the back, taller beacon. If the captain doesn't line up with the beams, the ship is off...

Michigan Lights - Kalamazoo

A replica of the 1859 Kalamazoo Lighthouse sits on the shore of the Kalamazoo Lake in Saugatuck, Michigan. 4/27/2018 dwm photo In my pursuit of covered bridges and lighthouses, only a few new creations make my list. Originals restored or recreated are more interesting to me. My trip up the coast of Michigan in the fall of 2017 didn't include the Kalamazoo light because it was a replica and there were ten I listed as a higher priority. I passed it by. Just a few miles from of Interstate 196, it was a short detour on a recent family trip to add it to the collection. The new version of the 1859 lighthouse was built in 2002. (dwm photo) The light is modeled on the second lighthouse which guided boats off Lake Michigan and up the Kalamazoo River. Built in 1859, it replaced one built ten years earlier that was too close to the river and threatened by erosion.
