| Taking the ferry across Lake Wisconsin. 8/26/23 dwm |
First we met a couple for breakfast who are friends with a friend of ours. The reason we met was a common interest in lighthouses.
There was no way to know how it would go but it was very nice. We hit it off right away and discovered we had more in common than lighthouses.
We talked for a couple hours about our different lighthouse keeper experiences. They were on an island three weeks caring for it and a primitive campground plus giving tours of the light.
That evening we got together with a different couple. The woman was one of my wife's classmates and her husband, who I had met when we attended a high school class get together in 2022 and 40th reunion this summer. They made a weekend trip to Madison, so we met for dinner then gave them a guided tour of some of our favorite Madison things, including the Merrimac Ferry.

| Part of my Sunday ride. 8/27/23 dwm photo |
Sunday I was ready for some alone time. My wife had plans in the afternoon, so after church I rode my bike around Lake Monona then watched the Brewers win their 8th consecutive game.
That night was our fantasy football league draft. I decided to use the 'auto draft' feature which simply picks the highest ranked player on the board every time.
Doing it that way took personal feelings out and made it about the numbers. It's an experiment that will run the course of the NFL season.
Monday was the start of a busy week and a mistake I made at the end of the day made Tuesday busier than it had to be. It wasn't until I got home that I realized I left my office keys hanging in the lock of a file cabinet, meaning a trip back to get the keys Tuesday morning.
Wednesday was a normal work day. There were phone calls, editing, and dozens of emails wrapped around a nice gift that came in. The final four months of the year get busy so any projects I can get ahead on saves time later.
The Milwaukee Brewer winning streak stopped at nine but it was nice to see the team put a strong run together with a month left in the season. There is a new sense of confidence in the team which has helped the offense. Pitching has been reliable all season, to have hope in the post-season this team is going to need clutch hits.
Thursday our team interviewed another potential software vendor for a new database, then had a donor visit before attending a reception honoring volunteers on our east campus.
The weather this week has been a respite after last week's extreme heat. Given that we are stuck between heat waves, it's nice to get an extended stint of cool weather before it goes back into the 90s starting the day you read this. It got so cool, temperatures dropped below 50!
An unwelcome development Thursday night was learning that the networks of ESPN were taken off the air by our cable provider. Both sides are claiming they are looking out for the customers in the disagreement over carriage fees but I'm pretty sure the rate we pay will go up either way.
Friday was another nice day and the last temperate one until at least the middle of the new week. I had the office windows open to welcome the cool breeze. There were only three continuing education courses to take on the employee website; I took advantage of the morning to knock them out.
Heat is rolling in Saturday, stay cool and keep hydrated my friends!
