They used to call me Pointdexter

St Joseph range lights 9/18/2017 dwm photo New Buffalo is actually the first lighthouse after crossing from Indiana into Michigan, but as my former editors might remind me, that would bury the lead. St. Joseph deserves the top of the blog. When we found a place to park, I checked the electronic parking attendant. The only options were paying for a half-day or whole-day. The lot was nearly empty, and I wouldn't be there a half-hour, so I worked fast. My loss, I didn't walk the pier toward the lights. Joined on the beach by a guy with a metal detector, the second light caught my attention when it came into view. Together the two become range lights. In addition to identifying a safe harbor to boats on the water, the two offer specific instructions. Looking at the lights from the right angle, the lights of the front and lower light will line up exactly with the back, taller beacon. If the captain doesn't line up with the beams, the ship is off...

The Norske Nook

The original Norke Nook in Osseo, WI. 7/13/25 On the way home from Eau Claire Sunday, we stopped in Osseo for breakfast at Norske Nok At one point there were four Norske Nook restaurants. We're blessed in the Madison area to have one in nearby DeForest, the third location is in Rice Lake. The original, original location in Osseo was across the street. When the new restaurant was built in the 1990s, for a while they used both locations. An insurance client of mine while we lived in the area was the sister of the woman who founded Norske Nook. It was more than a place to take out-of-town guests, we liked taking the two boys there for a special treat. For a couple years, I took turns taking one of the boys to the Nook for breakfast. My parents loved Norske Nook. Dad would usually order a slice of sour cream raisin pie after breakfast. Sunday morning, there were three tables of men going home from a tournament in Eau Claire. They not only planned to eat a slice with breakfast, t...

Michigan Lights - South Haven and Holland Harbor

South Haven South Pier Light 9/18/2017 dwm photo 26 miles north of the lights in St. Joseph stands the South Pier Light in (surprise, surprise) South Haven, Michigan. The road from light to light kept us close to the lake as we looked to check off our third light stop of the day. I'm unsure how to count the range light combination in St. Joseph, but it seems fair to count that as one light, not two. In any case, South Haven was thirty minutes up the road and an hour's drive beyond New Buffalo. The dark red candle with the black lantern house stands at the end of a concrete pier. It isn't an imposing light, but it creates a presence which must be reassuring to boats on the water. It looks good for a candle first lit in 1872. These days, lights like the one in South Haven serve as the center of downtown. They attract tourists, like me, to spend some time and money while enjoying the living history on display. The catwalk is mostly decorative now, b...

David Mossner - They used to call me Pointdexter: I started the blog in 2012 as a place to write about some of my favorite subjects. It quickly became a habit (I posted daily for 3 full years) and a routine driven by pictures I take and areas of interest. I'm thankful you took the time to check out the page and hope you come again.
