My Sports Illustrated, March 2025 dwm |
Early on, I was paging through the weekly magazine looking at stories that caught my attention. There were a few breaks from then to now, but for most of my life, I've been a subscriber.
Just a few years ago I expected to enjoy the regular company of a magazine that shared stories about games and their heroes for the rest of my life.
Also a few years ago, the publisher decided the internet, and the SI.com website were more current than a magazine and changed from being a weekly to a monthly publication.
While it went through some financial re-positioning, I missed a month or two before it got back on track. The old routine of reading Sports Illustrated cover-to-cover every week became an issue of finding time to read it whenever it arrived in the mailbox.
I recently received my second opportunity to renew my subscription for either 1-year, 2, or 3. It's $95 for 12 issues, that rounds up to $8 an issue! In the absence of a weekly read, I signed on with The Athletic for an annual subscription that was just over $70. It has new stories on my favorite teams and sports around the world that appear online all the time.
So, this is probably the end of the line unless the third opportunity to renew my subscription comes with a lower price than the second offer, it will be bye-bye to SI.
Here are other blogs written about my favorite sports magazine:
December 23, 2013 Sportsman of the Year issue
July 23, 2015 My favorite columnist asked for help
February 20, 2014 The annual swimsuit issue For obvious reasons, I never forgot the very first swimsuit issue that came to our mailbox. I don't recall mom making any comments about it. Somewhere in the last five years, SI made the decision for me as I somehow was put on the "refuses the swimsuit issue" list of subscribers.
