The Swimsuit issue.
It's been published in February by Sports Illustrated for 50 years now.
I've had a subscription since the 4th grade - with a couple years missed here and there - so I've seen most of them.
One of the things more fun than the issue itself are the letters to the editor that follow expressing shock that SI would ever publish such a thing.
Since early January, there have been warnings inside the magazine telling subscribers what to do if they don't want to receive a copy.
Yet, there will be complaining letters.
It reminds me of the line of dialogue in the movie Casablanca:
Capt.Louis Renault: I'm shocked, shocked to find that gambling is going on in here! [a croupier hands Renault a pile of money]
Cheryl Tiegs, Kathy Ireland, Paulina Porzikova, Christy Brinkley, Heidi Klum, Rebecca Romjan, Tyra Banks, and Kate Upton are among the many women who have turned a spot on the cover into fortune and fame.
Is the issue a great piece of literature? Well, probably not. Is it the worst thing to happen to civilization? I don't think that is the case either.
One of the things it's become over the years is an eight and a half inches by 11 inch piece of summer - sand and surf - that pushes away the snow drifts, parkas, and wind chills to add full color pictures to our dreams of summer.
