Bridges of Madison County - Hogback

Hogback Covered Bridge over the North River.

Iowa is hog and pig country.  A bridge named Hogback made me think it was for the animal.

It turns out, a nearby ridge (see photo below right) looks like a hog's back where it forms the end of the valley.

The bridge remains in its original location, although only pedestrians and bikes cross it now.

The bridge is north of Winterset in a valley off a quiet country road.

The bridge becomes a picture frame.

We parked on the west side of the river.  I noticed a large tree had fallen near the bridge; thankfully it fell south instead of north.

It may be the most perfect location for a bridge in Madison County.  The nearby fields are surrounded by protective hills while a quiet river splits the valley in two connected by the stately rebuilt bridge.

This is the last of Madison County's six bridges.

By my count, I have three bridges left to get all of them in Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.  The Little Mary's Bridge in southern Illinois; a rebuilt White's Bridge in Michigan; and Cedar Ford Bridge in Indiana will finish the list.  It may take a year or two, but I'd love to add them to my covered bridge collection.
