Bridges of Indiana's Counties - Vermillion Co - #86 Hillsdale

The Ernie Pyle Monument in front
of the Hillsdale Bridge. 10/29/11 (dwm)
The Hillsdale Covered Bridge sits near a busy county highway, in a small park dedicated to native son and American hero, Ernie Pyle.

Ernie Pyle became famous writing about small towns and the people who lived in them. He grew up in nearby Dana, Indiana.

When the United States joined World War II Pyle wrote about men on the front lines.  He was one of the most famous journalists of his day - trusted and loved for the news he sent home from the front.

He died in the Battle of Okinawa.

It is also known as the
Possum Bottom Bridge,
but it isn't in Possum
Bottom anymore (dwm)
The bridge is still known by locals as the Possum Bottom Bridge for the community where it was built in 1876.

Hillsdale is how outsiders know it - for the village closest to its new location in the Ernie Pyle rest park.
