Bridges of Indiana's Counties - Rush Co. - #83 Smith

Smith Covered Bridge on E 150 N, Rush County, IN

The Smith Covered Bridge is the sixth and final bridge in Rush County.

It is northeast of Rushville on E 150 N over the Big Flat Rock River where Ben Davis Creek empties into the Big Flat Rock.

The river is lined with trees, but the landscape opens quickly into farm fields to the south.

The land is mostly flat other than the bed for the meandering river and nearby stream.

The Smith remains an active bridge.  It was built in 1877 by A.M. Kennedy and rehabbed in 1996.

The scroll work on either side of
the portal was a trademark of
Kennedy bridges. (dwm)
My visit to this bridge must have been pretty quick as we moved to finish the Rush County bridges plus those in nearby counties.  I only have three photos that were saved after editing.

Just take your time as you cross the bridge; since the road is a straight shot, you can't see the sides of the bridge easily.

It is also helpful to always think of covered bridges as single-lane, so be aware of oncoming traffic.
