In 2010, the bridge in Moscow, Indiana was under construction to rebuild after a tornado in June, 2008. There was a sign telling the story of the bridge's fate, and in front of me was the hopeful appearance of lumber forming a Burr Arch truss.
The bridge re-opened that September. Local citizens; leaders from the community; county; and state pledged to make sure the tiny town regained its Big Bridge.

The Moscow bridge is the third longest in Indiana. It was first built in 1886 by Emmett Kennedy's company. After the storm 122 years later, inmates from the nearby state prison assisted recovering salvageable material. There was enough that 40% of the new bridge uses original pieces.
Dan McCollum & Sons followed the Kennedy company's lead in the new construction. Their work was so good the bridge bears their name, but according to the Rushville Republican newspaper it is widely referred to as the Moscow Covered Bridge.

The bridge is beautiful and again anchors the annual bridge festival. Historic bridges like this one were built to help commerce by making it easier for people and products to get to market. Today, the bridges bring the people to the community. Many of those folks bring business in the form of tourism dollars.
