Bridges of Indiana's Counties - Rush Co. - #78 Forsythe

The approach to Forsythe Covered Bridge

The Forsythe Bridge is the first of six in Rush County, Indiana.

It is one of many built by the Kennedys.  They built 12 bridges stretching from 1873 to 1916 - three generations of builders.

The Forsythe was built by Emmett, son of Archibald in 1888.

One of their trademarks was the scroll work seen in the photo below on either side of the portal arch.

The Kennedy bridges we saw had been refurbished with the scrolling highlighted in contrasting green pain on the brilliant white structure.

I love the approach to the Forsythe, driving under a canopy of leaves formed by tree branches hanging over County Road 650.

It's one of those cool places where your car and the asphalt surface is the only clue that you haven't time-traveled back to the late 19th or early 20th century.
