Bridges of Indiana's Counties - Ripley Co. - #77 Holton

It may feel as we get to the last dozen or so of Indiana's covered bridges that we've run out of history.

In Parke County, the bridges are an industry of their own inspiring modern bridge-lovers to research their history.

Sadly, the two Ripley County bridges haven't benefited from the same kind of love.

The Holton bridge is also known as the Otter Creek Covered Bridge.

The most interesting fact I've found so far involves the Holton name bestowed on the bridge.

It's only open to pedestrians

The small community's Wikipedia page explains the town of 500 people gets its name from the original owner of the land, Jesse Holman.

Wait. What?  The town of Holton and the Holton Covered Bridge get their name from Jesse Holman?

The bridge closed to traffic in 1996, but remains in place, open to walkers.
