Game 14 - Hope Crushed

Green Bay 24  Carolina 31.

The dream is in critical condition.  The only path to the post-season for the Packers requires Tampa to beat Atlanta tonight.

An Atlanta win ends the dream.  A Falcon loss leaves the Pack faint hope that ifs and buts turn into candy and nuts.

Aaron Rodgers returned to play Carolina, but you don't get wins for showing up.  He completed three passes to guys in the wrong color jersey.

That hadn't happened since 2009, which was his second year as a starter.

The defense did enough to win, and I think if Packer turnovers were two or less - they beat Carolina.

The Panthers didn't play their best game, and sad to say, neither did Green Bay.

It's fair to attribute Rodger's unlikely performance to rust that accumulates when 7 games are missed due to injury and a relentless Panther defense.

Green Bay's defense has struggled all year, especially against the pass, where the inability to regularly pressure the quarterback makes it tough on the defensive backs.  Conversely, the less than their best performance by the defensive backs make it tough on the pass rush to get to the QB.

It's a sad day for Packer Nation as we think what might have been.  Some will cry and moan.  Others will curse decisions that, in hindsight, should have been different to get better results.  More will point to a rash of injuries in key positions.

Unless the Packers really beat the odds and reach the play-offs a 9th straight season - I think there will be changes to the roster and coaching staff to pursue Green Bay's annual goal of reaching and winning the Super Bowl.

That goal seems out of reach this year.

7 - 7.   go pack, go.
