The first days of July were unseasonably warm and humid with chances of rain or storms almost every day.
Saturday morning July 4, had a steady forecast of scattered rain showers across south Wisconsin but a closer look at the radar showed a window of opportunity to ride.
I headed out just after 6 am headed east. It was uneventful except for the moment when I dropped my water bottle.
Stopping as quickly as I could, I walked back down the trail on the side where I expected to find it. I was almost back to the bike when I glanced at the other side of the 10-foot wide path and saw the bottle, intact and no worse for the wear.
Because of the weather, I wanted to get miles under the wheels as efficiently as possible.
I started going east on the Military Ridge trail, went south on the Badger trail as far as the asphalt took me.
This was my second trip this year on the Badger, the first time was after a storm that blocked my path before I reached the end of the pavement. It was all clear on Saturday.
I took the Badger back north to where it connected to the Capital City trail and used that to reach McFarland where I turned around.
The down-and-back on the Badger State trail gave me an extra 12 miles for the ride. When I rolled the bike into the garage I tried to get the bike computer to show the screen I wanted, showing miles, time on the bike, and average speed. That usually takes a couple of light pushes, but instead of changing the display, it vanished so the tale from the bike computer is what I remembered from my last look.
According to my memory of the Bike Computer
Distance: 49 miles Total Distance in 2026: 805 miles
Average Speed: 16.1 mph
Time in the Saddle: 3 hours
