Is it Hot Enough for Ya?

WI State Fair. 8/2/25 dwm
This time of year, "is it hot enough for ya?" is a socially acceptable way to start a conversation. It's counter-part, "is it cold enough" is perfectly fine in a frozen February.

It's so common, July 23 is called Is it hot enough for ya day!

Most of the time here in Wisconsin, we feel uncomfortable when the mercury reaches the upper 80s and low 90s.

But there are folks, many of them transplants to cheese country, who like it hot and don't mind the humidity that goes with it. Your conversation won't go as far, but you'll learn whether or not the person you asked is an original Wisconsinite.

The question depends on timing. A few months ago, we had temperatures in the 90s when it is usually cooler, so most folks were quick to answer that they prefer moderate temperatures in April and May.

During state fair, which runs in early August, it's normal to have highs in the upper 80s with enough humidity to drench a t-shirt. Oh yeah, it's hot enough for me, but whaddya going to do? It's summer in Wisconsin!

This week we're back to normal, or slightly below average, unlike most of the last two weeks which were dancing with the heat index in triple digits and humidity that made everyone ask if it was 'hot enough.'

The high in Madison 7/2/2024 was 83.  (dwm)
It's unlikely we're done with the heat, the dog days of summer drag all the way from July 3 to August 11.

If you need other material, here's a couple other lines about the weather for you:

It's so hot, I saw a bird pulling a worm out of the ground with an oven mitt!

What did the pig say when it was out in the heat? "Oh man, I'm bacon!"

It's so hot, I saw a funeral procession pull through a Dairy Queen!
