The Pie Ride last Saturday was great fun. It was a nice route without a lot of traffic, and seemed to have a good turnout.
There is a lot about Janesville that surprises me compared to what I remember growing up.
The Monterrey Dam was removed years ago, but as the years go by, the natural look of the river continues to improve. It's a much prettier river than we had in the 1970s.
The same goes for the Rock River downtown which was covered with a parking lot between Court Street and Milwaukee Avenue (below photo). As I crossed a pedestrian bridge over the river I was struck by how much nicer the downtown feels with views of the river and room for people to congregate downtown.
The city would be better with General Motors and Parker Pen, but it's nice to see Janesville's downtown buzzing on a Saturday with a public market and people enjoying the summer sunshine.
Father's Day was nice. Our youngest son and his wife took us to Texas Roadhouse for dinner. We've liked Texas Roadhouse since we first discovered it while living in Indianapolis.
I've never seen one so crowded. We waited in our cars until we were told to come inside. Then we waited another 15 minutes before being seated. As Yogi Berra once famously said, "No one goes there anymore, it's too crowded." We'll return but we might decide to leave it alone when the parking lot overflows into the Walmart lot across the street.

As much as I love Mt. Dew, I wasn't sure about Dew Dunkers, but was more than willing to try them. They're good and the citrus-flavored donut has a distinctive taste. I will suggest that one Dew Dunker is the perfect serving size.
Wednesday I dropped off the Prius at Smart Toyota for its scheduled service, which, every so often means rotating the tires and nothing else. Usually an oil change and tire rotation go together, but when it's just tires, it's a quick visit an inexpensive.
Thursday evening we watched The Sheep Detectives on Amazon Prime. The story is a bit quirky, humorous, and poignant. It looks like a kid's movie but it appeals to a wider audience.
Friday morning I rode to our east campus for a special event, cutting the ribbon for a bike path that will provide access for our resident bicyclists and those in the community looking for a safer route to and from Sun Prairie and the far-east side of Madison.

You can use Cottage Grove Road, which isn't bad, but it is a two lane road going at highway speed and to reach Sun Prairie it requires using Reiner Road which, in my mind, is a dicier route than Cottage Grove.
I've used a route that skirts East Towne Mall and then up High Crossing Boulevard. It's not bad, but there are exit and entrance ramps to get your attention.
Another way to go is around the airport to the north, then taking Hoepker Road uphill and across U.S. Highway 51.

The new path offers a quieter and safer path that doesn't expose bikes to fast traffic on Hoepker or High Crossing to reach the new Hospital, American Family Insurance, or the Prairie Ridge campus. All that traffic is bad news for rickshaw bicycles we use to give rides around campus and the surrounding area, which won't be a worry anymore thanks to the new path.
After the ceremony, I joined some residents riding the new trail and decided to extend the ride on the new (to me) Sun Prairie Bike Loop. I'll have more on both in tomorrow's blog.
As always, thanks for reading and coming back as often as you do, I hope you enjoy your Saturday.
