My Week that Was - June 20

The Riley Tavern. 6/13/26 dwm
The Riley Tavern is one of the places we've been intending to visit almost since we moved here. We finally made it last Saturday.

It was originally a General Store when John E. Brown opened it in 1884, according to the Riley Tavern story on its webpage, to serve local farmers and passengers on the train that stopped just several yards away.

The community was bustling in the first-half of the 20th century and in 1950, the store became Riley Tavern. The trains are long-gone, but thanks to rails-to-trails, it's now the Military Ridge State Bike trail delivering cyclists and walkers to its door on a daily basis.

The tavern itself is beautiful with a bar and back bar. Outside there is a beautiful lawn with a bar of its own and a stage for live music, perfect for a Wisconsin summer night.

We ordered their tavern-style pizza. It was so good we definitely won't wait as long for a return trip.

On the way to Riley's, I noticed a doe standing in tall grass on the right side of the road. I slowed down, so when she crossed the highway, I was still crawling when I saw her fawn pop out of the grass then awkwardly made it across two lanes of traffic. Since I was already stopped, an oncoming car was already slowing when they saw the fawn take their last steps across the road.

Tuesday was our annual donor appreciation dinner. It's a plated dinner with a few short messages of thanks and appreciation for the impact supporters make every day.

Thursday morning I waited at home for our HVAC tech to arrive to tune-up the air conditioner for the season ahead. We bought the furnace/AC unit in 2015 and have had the good people at Bethke Heating and Air Conditioning out to look things over twice a year ever since. Many years ago, we learned our lesson about postponing regular check-ups.

The tech was finished in less than an hour, so I was back in the office an hour earlier than I expected. It was a busy day - with a number of emails, phone calls, two stories to write, and starting to work on a presentation due in a couple of weeks.

After work, my wife asked me to stop at Hy-Vee and pick up two steak dinners. I didn't expect to see a grill in front of the store with a dozen steaks on the grill with two sides  ready to go, but there they were. I bought two steak dinners and brought them home. The steaks were pretty good, certainly better than I expected after a six-mile drive home.

Friday I was off as Oakwood recognizes Juneteenth as one of our work holidays. It had been several weeks since we last enjoyed breakfast at the Prairie Cafe, so that's where our day started. We ran a few errands after that and had plans to see the movie, Pressure. Released at the end of May, we apparently missed it's run in local cinemas, but learned we could stream it. I'll share some thoughts about the movie tomorrow.

It was a busy week that thankfully only had four working days, thanks for making time to read this and have a wonderful fourth week of June.
