My Week that Was - April 4

Breakfast at Hubbard Ave. Diner. 3/28/26 dwm

We started the week with breakfast at the Hubbard Avenue Diner in nearby Middleton. It's one of the great restaurants owned by the Food Fight group which owns and operates 16 local restaurants, each with their own specialties.

The diner has a 1950s vibe that dabbles into math as a place that specializes in baking and serving dozens of pies and talking about pi (3.1415) and using its symbol on their merchandise.

I was feeling like oatmeal, and asked for it with some chocolate chips on top and a couple slices of sourdough toast. It was filling.

We've had a lot of things going at home lately, so we decided to catch up on our shows Saturday. One detail which made that possible was that the NCAA tournament and the Brewer game didn't start until late afternoon.

I also had time to look through the Wisconsin Bike Federation's 2026 Ride Guide. It's a benefit of membership. In addition to specific rides, the guide also shares stories on the many trails and bike paths around the state.
Daffodils. 3/30/2026 dwm

We had a spectacular day Monday as southerly winds lifted temperatures into the mid-70s.

I was on our east campus for the day and spotted a cluster of daffodils. The brick wall behind it reflected the heat, accelerating the flowering process.

It was great seeing flowers pop out this week.

My wife got sick, some virus/fever nasty combination that shut her down for most of it. I avoided it for at least a few days, but late Wednesday my throat started to feel a little scratchy.

I expected to work as usual Thursday, but when that day dawned, I knew at the most it would be working from home. I sent a text message to the rest of the team, then sat down to eat. By the time I returned to the home office, I wasn't in shape to work. I sent another text saying I'd take the day off instead.

I slept for most of it. When I wasn't sleeping, I felt a little dizzy, and wasn't hungry. At lunch time, I wasn't hungry but decided to drink my daily protein shake. Thirty minutes later, the shake came back. I lost count, but there were at least nine urgent trips to the bathroom. I fell asleep around 10 that night, waking up a few times, but not actively sick. When I got out of bed for the day, one I had already taken off, I felt 80% better. I'm very grateful.

While we both felt better Friday, we thought it was a better idea to attend church virtually this Good Friday. We expect to get there Easter Sunday morning.

A lot of people around Madison have this illness that shot through our place, I hope it bypasses you, it wasn't fun. Thanks for reading!
