Caps & Hats

Most of my hats. 3/21/26 dwm
"A lot" is a relative term. A friend of mine has 10 hats. I have 10 times that many, so by comparison, I have a lot of hats. But I'm aware some people have more than I do, which makes their batch of hats a lot more than mine.

The Green Bay Packer hats alone are a third of my collection.

When I cleaned up the home office a few days ago, I noticed the crates and more than a few caps, needed dusting.

I took the hats down, then started over by placing the Milwaukee Brewer caps (below photo) in a new place with additional room.

My oldest cap is a Brewer cap that fit when I was ten. The second oldest is from Caterpillar in Peoria, Illinois. When I visited my grandparents, we often visited the company's headquarters. More than once, I came home with a hat.

Third is a Packer cap a long-time friend gave me in the early 1980s. It looks a little like a helmet with the Packer "G" on both sides of the cap. Like the old Brewer ball cap, it's in tough shape.

A few of the hats are fitted, but the rest cover the spectrum: snap-back, strap-back, Dad hats, and trucker caps.

A few caps were purchased to commemorate a trip, for example, when went to the farm where Field of Dreams was filmed and I couldn't leave without being one of those people who came to the farm and gave the owners money.

If my employer had hats, I tried to get one, my favorite is the navy blue trucker hat from CBS Sports. As far as I know, at the time (1986-89) you had to have a connection, like working for a CBS affiliate, to get one.

For nearly a decade, Citgo gas stations in Wisconsin sponsored the state-wide broadcast of Green Bay preseason games. Each year there was a different design. I have eleven of the hats, but have no idea if that's the complete set. I doubt it.

Four hats aren't rare but they were part of the volunteer 'uniform' for some of the big sporting events in Indianapolis where I served as a volunteer.

The swag from those events are things I like to wear during the NCAA tournament or the Super Bowl (Indianapolis hosted SB 46).

When we've bought new cars, I've asked the salesperson to throw in a hat to seal the deal, which is why I have caps from Burtness Chevrolet, Osseo Ford, KIA, and Toyota.

I'm a lot more discriminating now when it comes to buying caps - the most recent is the Packers NFL draft hat from 2025 when the team hosted the draft at Lambeau Field
