Ohio Lighthouses - Huron Harbor

The community of Huron Ohio didn't exist when it began welcoming trade and traders to it's harbor.

According to the account in Lighthouse Friends, the French established a trading post in 1749 but it didn't survive the Revolutionary War.

By 1824, Huron was a thriving community with a boarding house and the first shipbuilder led the way for more to open.

The first navigational aid was installed in 1835 on the west pier guiding ships into the harbor. That lighthouse wasn't strong enough to survive storms on Lake Erie, it was destroyed in 1854.

A replacement was built three years later using iron except for the 27-feet of its base which exposed those using a circular staircase to the elements on their way to the enclosed lantern.

The remaining light was built in 1939, three-quarters of a mile off shore. It was one of the first lighthouses on Lake Erie equipped with an electrically powered beacon.

The light originally stood 65-feet above its pedestal and its light could be seen as far as 18 miles away.

The art deco design was popular at the time but in our travels, it seems to me most of the lights who no longer have a lantern room were done in this art deco style. The lantern of this light was removed in 1972. The harbor still welcomes sea-going freighters and their loads of coal, iron-ore, and grain.

The Huron Harbor lighthouse stands at least a mile from where Main Street stops serving traffic in Huron, Ohio.

It's a nice and easy walk, From where we parked, I could see the rides to the west at Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio (photo below) and captured an egret just as it was swallowing a fish (photo below).

This light was designed by the same builders who built the Conneaut lighthouse, 120 miles northeast and the last light on Erie shoreline in Ohio.
