Winter is Here

Verona snow. 11/30/2025 dwm
It's the darkest day of the year. But after six months of losing daylight, tomorrow we start getting more light.

For a while now I can get to work without putting on sunglasses and leave them off for the ride home because the sun isn't up on the way in, and it's below the horizon when I'm heading home.

So far we've had a fairly normal winter with accumulating snow in late November. It became unseasonably cold after that, and it was only a few days ago that we experienced three successive days with temperatures above freezing and approaching 40!

For most of us in the northern latitudes, the solstice means each day gets at least a few seconds of extra daylight.

Today the sun came up at 7:24 local time and will set at 4:24. That's just under 9 hours of daylight.

On January 21, the sun will rise at 7:22 and set at 4:55. That's 9 hours and 33 minutes of daylight.

By February 21, the sun will rise at 6:46 and set at 5:36.  That's 10 hours and 50 minutes of sunshine. Embrace the cold and the dark, my friend, brighter days are coming.

Solstice

Dark? It's not at 9 oh three in the morning
It's darkest before the light
But the light will come.

Stumbling in the dark
Will become basking in the sun
We just have to make it thru
one
day
at
a
time.
