Sweet Treats for Breakfast

Saturday morning we responded to the siren call of baked goods for breakfast.

The Badger football team was out of town, so there wasn't any home-game traffic to deter a trip to Regent Street.

First stop was Greenbush Bakery, a football field from Camp Randall stadium

We stepped right up to an abundant selection of donuts under glass and stacked neatly in trays behind the counter.

I chose a chocolate old-fashioned donut and a glazed donut with chocolate frosting.

Greenbush is a family owned operation.

According to it's, Marv and Barbara Miller bought a
struggling bakery shop near the U.W. campus with a plan to make the kind of high-quality, old-fashion baked goods they remembered as kids. In 1998, they partnered with Madison's Jewish Community to become a certified kosher dairy kitchen.

The store we visited Saturday opened in 2019 after they moved up the street. They've had two locations since opening a second store in 2017 on the east side of Madison.

They make great donuts!

Stella's is known for their hot and spicy cheese bread sold fresh at three Farmer's Markets in Madison. Now there is a store on Regent Street just blocks east of Greenbush Bakery.

I hadn't enjoyed anything from Stella's until Saturday, although I'm not sure why it took so long. Their retail location has indoor and outdoor seating and features an enticing menu with 8 items in addition to whatever goodies are in the bakery case.

We came home with a loaf of Monkey Bread, a cup of hot chocolate and a frosted cookie.

I saved the cookie for the afternoon. It was more than a decorated sugar cookie. The cookie had a nice flavor and tasty texture.

After seeing the store, I'm looking forward to going back for a sandwich, either a BLT or grilled cheese.

Stella's is also family-owned. Jennifer Patrello is the owner, it was named for her great-grandmother, whose roots in Jamaica and Panama inspired the store's products.

This location is brand new, opening November 4. It's separate from their production facility which makes their baked goods and what they sell directly to stores in the area and beyond.

It was an unconventional breakfast, but it was mighty good and delivered us to two of Madison's iconic bakeries.
