Conneaut (con-e-aught) saw its first lighthouse in 1835. Two others took over protecting this stretch of Lake Erie, then the light that now stands on the West Breakwater was built in 1934.
The latest lighthouse cost $70,000. It's square, 60-feet tall, and has a light and fog signal which operate via an underwater cable, was commissioned in 1936.
Originally there was a lantern room on top of the tower. It was removed in 1972 when the light was automated and replaced with a beacon.
According to it's article in Lighthouse Friends, a black stripe was later added to the white tower to serve as a daymark.

In 2007, the Coast Guard decided the light was no longer needed and it was put on sale at auction.
A local family purchased it in 2011 for family gatherings, Inside the tower are two floors the size of an average living room.
It has an art deco look about it that separates it from most lighthouses seen around the Great Lakes. While there were rooms inside, no one ever lived there, the light was originally controlled remotely by a keeper and two assistants from a house on shore.
