Ohio Covered Bridges - Geeting

Geeting Coverd Bridge 10/4/2025 dwm
The Geeting bridge was our fourth in Ohio and second of eight surviving covered bridges in Preble County.

The bridge is named for David Geeting, who owned land to the south and west of the bridge, and was the first to drive over it in 1894.

Naming rights for covered bridges frequently went to the landowners who sold or provided land for a more convenient way of crossing water or valleys.

Many of the bridges we visited across Indiana are named for those who owned the land.

There isn't much information about the Geeting bridge. What I did find was on coveredbridges.net.

The bridge is a mile or two north of Interstate Highway 70, as the crow flies. We crossed the Interstate on U.S. Highway 127, then followed Price Road around sections of farmland through the bridge over Price Creek.

We pulled to the side of the road when he got to the bridge and didn't see a car, truck, or tractor for the entire time. I was able to get a long-distance shot (left); from both sides; and slightly below the bridge.

This is just the fourth Ohio bridge I've written about, but it's the first one, so far, that was built by a builder who built a lot of them. The Geeting bridge is credited to Everett S. Sherman, as are 19 other covered bridges in Preble County alone. An internet search indicated Sherman also built bridges in Delaware County, Ohio.

The bridge has been worked on at least four times over its 130-plus years carrying vehicles over Price Creek. The original bridge cost $2,691. The most recent work was in 2008, it cost $379,753.

This was the first of the four bridges that still "looks" the part.

It's in the middle of farmland on all sides, and provides a connection for farmers and other residents from one side of the creek to the other without having to drive miles and miles to find another bridge.
