My Week that Was - September 6

Olde Town Coffee House. 8/30/25 dwm
The weekend started Saturday but for a change would extend into Monday which provided more opportunities than the usual two days.

We didn't have big plans but wanted to change the routine somewhat, so we went back to a breakfast spot we hadn't visited in several years.

It wasn't that we didn't like it; the reason was primarily that it's all the way across Dane County and a lot of places we enjoy are in between.

The Olde Town Coffee House in Cottage Grove is a clean and comfortable breakfast, lunch, and coffee place.

It has a large breakfast menu. My wife had a chocolate croissant while I ordered a waffle that was delivered to the table a short time later. The waffle was nice and warm and so were the pats of butter that came with them. It's a pet peeve of mine to receive cold butter packets because they don't spread well. Melted butter is a delicious topper that goes well with syrup.

The Olde Town is a friendly place and worth a trip, especially if you live in the east half of Dane County.

On the way home, I stopped to pick up a case of Muscle Milk protein shakes but unlike the membership Big Box stores that offer 18-packs, the most I could get in a case at a grocery store was a 12-bottle package. That's key because the cost per bottle is much more reasonable as the packs get larger. Unless your storage space or fridge is too small, I'd suggest staying away from buying these items singly or in four packs.

It was nice settling in to watch the first full day of college football. The game between top-ranked Texas and the third team, Ohio State was close throughout with the Buckeyes getting a lead they protected. There were several upsets to start the season, the biggest was Florida State beating Alabama. Alabama doesn't generally lose games like this and the way Florida State looked last year, only the most ardent believers thought they would win. That's a big part of the fun watching college football.

Wednesday I finally got my car into the shop. It took three attempts, the first two times I used the online scheduling system. The first time I misread the calendar it showed on the screen; the second time I thought I solved that problem but when days before the appointment I realized I hadn't received a confirmation, I called and learned I wasn't scheduled. Thankfully the person who told me that booked the appointment.

The price for an oil change and tire rotation has gone up since the last time I needed that service. We learned the hard-way a long time ago about saving money by not getting the car serviced regularly. Regular maintenance is the best way to go.

Thursday was big for a lot of people, or maybe it's two kinds of people: football fans and people playing fantasy football. While I'm both, I'm definitely more of fan than fantasy player. The opening weekend of the NFL started Thursday night at the home of last season's champion, Philadelphia Eagles; then there is a game in Brazil Friday. Green Bay hosts Detroit in one of 12 Sunday afternoon games with a game Sunday night; Monday Night Football ends the week. It doesn't slow down, the Packers start the second week next Thursday. Friday we had our first "cookout" for our automatic donors. It's more of a picnic than a cookout, and even that stretches things, because the menu is what might remind people of cookouts or picnics. We typically hold these events in a campus restaurant. 35 people attended which is more than expected which was nice.

On the way home, I saw this on the Culver's signboard: "Now hiring full-time adults, $20/hour." I'm sure they know what they're doing, but I'm not sure there are that many full-time adults out there!

As long as you can, make sure you spend enough hours acting like a kid so no one will ever think of hiring you as a 'full-time' adult! Here's to your inner child - have a great week.
