Autumn Equinox = Fall

Point Iroquios Lighthouse, MI. 10/7/25
Did you feel it? Just a moment ago, we switched from summer to autumn in the instant when the sun was directly above the equator.

That moment marks the beginning of fall in the Northern Hemisphere. Autumn means harvest in Latin while equinox means equal distribution of the sun's rays for both hemispheres.

That's the scientific description of the 90-day transition from summer to winter which usually starts around September 22, give or take a day.

In the Madison area, we've been getting hints of autumn for weeks as leaves began to show their colors and crops approach the end of the growing season.

For most of us, it means trips to the apple orchard and drives to the country to admire the changing colors on the hills and in the valleys. Have a Happy Autumn!

Leave

Do we go today?
Where will we go?
What happens when we get there?

The wind howls.
The rain falls.
Slowly at first,
Then in torrents,
Yards fill with falling colors.

Soon it's time to rake
For compost or
Flames which retrieve memories
From days gone by.

Leaf, Leave
Leaves, Leaving
Left.
