Here Come the Badgers

The Badgers home opener. 9/2/2023 dwm
The Wisconsin Badgers beat a Mid-American Conference, Miami of Ohio, 17 - 0 in their first game this past Thursday. They need five more wins to qualify for a post-season bowl game for the first time since 2023.

There are ten games left to determine what kind of season they will have.

The next two games are non-conference contests; the first at home against Middle Tennessee State and then traveling to play Alabama in Tuscaloosa. I expect them to beat Middle Tennessee and hope they keep the game close against the Crimson Tide. Expected record, 2 - 1.

If they can give Alabama a game, I'm probably not giving the Badgers their due respect.

The conference season starts with a home game against Maryland followed by a trip to Michigan, and then returning home to face Iowa. For Bucky to get to a bowl, I think they need to beat Maryland and Iowa. If they can, they will be 4 - 2.

After that, they fly to Oregon to take on the Ducks, then return home to play Washington. I don't see Bucky winning either of these games, dropping them to to 4 wins and 4 losses with three left to play.

That leaves a trip to Indiana who surprised the nation last year with a run to the College Football playoffs, then back home against Illinois. Both teams were ranked in the Top 25 before the season, so they will probably be favorites.  However, the Badgers need to beat one of the two for a shot at six wins. Of the ranked teams on the schedule, these two are likely the best candidates for an upset; I'm going with Bucky twice, raising their record to 6 - 4 with their oldest rival waiting in the Twin Cities.

The Gophers have been golden recently against the Badgers; a win would signal that UW is heading the right direction with a 7 - 4 record.

This season will be like dancing on the edge of a knife; if they win four of the five against Maryland, Iowa, Indiana, Illinois, and Minnesota; they are probably going to a bowl. If they only win three, it will still be an improvement over 2024 but short of a winning record.

It should be interesting, go Badgers!
