My Week that Was - June 7

A bright star on the trail. 5/31/25 dwm

Saturday morning's ride through farm land had flowers on display, one was white with a yellow center and the other a yellow flower with black dashes surrounded by 'rays.' I wasn't able to identify them with a guide to Wisconsin wild flowers, so it's possible these pretty blooms are invasive species.

After the ride, we drove to Windsor for lunch at A & W. It was a perfect lunch for an early summer day. It was the first time we visited this location, one of three within 50 miles of Madison. Although it's located off the interstate, we were served quickly.

I ordered the Papa Burger, hold the onions; with a frosted mug of root beer and onion rings. I'm not sure why I like onion rings but am not a fan of raw or cooked onions; it's just how I'm wired.

While Saturday and Sunday looked like summer, the temperatures were decidedly in the 60s and low 70s which is more spring than summer. The solstice is still 13 days away but meteorological summer began June 1.

Monday I was on Oakwood's east campus. It was beautiful with a steady breeze; a good day to fly a kite.

I noticed the first one while crossing an elevated indoor walkway between buildings. When my appointment was over, the kites were flying.

They were flying high when I went to lunch and flying when I returned. When they were still flying after my afternoon visit, I grabbed my phone and went out to take some pictures.

As I walked toward the kites I noticed how involved the kite flying operation was with multiple strings attaching each kite to the main line which stretched all the way to the top. The kites are big, but to get a sense of scale look for the basketball hoop in the lower right of the photo.

Tuesday I was honored to be part of a celebratory lunch for SAIL, which stands for Sharing Active Independent Lives. It is 20 years old this year.

It's an organization that helps older adults stay in their homes by providing resources and services; opportunities to socialize; and help by screening vendors that serve members.

Later that day, the Oakwood Foundation honored donors in our Golden Oak Society. It was a nice evening and we had a good crowd who enjoyed a nice meal.

The rest of the week was focused on projects and phone calls. Thursday afternoon I gave rides again, this time for residents in assisted living.

It was a perfect day for rides - sunny and warm. Over the last week there has been varying degrees of smoke in the atmosphere, thankfully by afternoon the levels dropped into the safe range.

A long John from Kwik Trip. 6/6/25 dwm
A week earlier, passengers were excited to see sand hill cranes on a nest. But over the last seven days some heavy rain apparently washed out the nest because it and the cranes were gone.

Friday was National Donut Day. Kwik Trip celebrated with a free long John for Kwik Reward members. After eating breakfast, I stopped to get mine and filled up my Little Buddy cup with a mix of regular and Diet Mt. Dew.

It was a full week with two long days and several productive meetings.

Today is one of the best on the calendar because we can usually find a Dairy Breakfast on the first Saturday in June.

I hope to share that with you tomorrow, thanks for reading!
