Flag on Merrimac Ferry. 7/2/2016 dwm
In 1861, after the start of the Civil War, the Union recognized the flag which flew over Ft. Sumter, where the first shots of the war were fired.
But it was a Wisconsin school teacher, Bernard J. Cigrand, who organized the first formal observance at Stony Hill school in Waubeka, part of Ozaukee County, north of Milwaukee.
Cigrand went on to champion Flag Day with speeches around the country and wrote many articles. In 1916, after 30 years of promoting Flag Day, President Woodrow Wilson declared June 14 as Flag Day. If you haven't put it up yet, take a moment to fly the flag.
Recently symbols of America have become politicized and associated with one candidate or party over another. That's too bad, especially for a flag that represents not only the people and values of this country but also the rights of people who have different points of view.
The week started differently than most. I got up the usual time but instead of going to the gym, we headed to Rock County so we could be among the first in line to get breakfast on the Templeton Farm north of Evansville.

Just when I thought I've met or seen every gym member this is; a new one walked in ten days ago. It was a middle-age guy who obviously worked out regularly and another who appeared to be a trainee.
That's not strange but the mid-to-big sized dog the middle-aged guy was leading with a leash was something I've not seen in 10-and-a-half years. The dog wasn't a problem but the idea that it was OK to bring a dog to a gym was a poor one. I saw the same crew walk in at the same time, 24 hours later, but didn't see that motley crew until yesterday. It seems clear to me that the dog isn't a service dog (they wear vests) or a guide dog (shorter leash and it wouldn't leave the hand of the guided person).

2024 card. dwm
While the envelopes were printed and ready to go, my contact at the print house let me know there are not enough cards to handle all of the birthdays in the last quarter. I chose a proof that wasn't picked for an earlier job and added two verses thanks to the magic of Chat GPT.
I asked the system for a short poem for the inside of the card aimed at older adults who support Oakwood. In ten seconds, or less, the result was practically perfect. I changed one word in the second verse and our next card was ready to print.
Thursday I finished the last continuing education class for the year. Ever since I rushed to finish before the end of year, I make it a point to start knocking off a class or two each week in the spring, starting with the longest courses, which run an hour, and work my way down to the 15-minute classes.
It was a productive day, finishing two articles before next week's deadline and started signing the third quarter birthday cards.

Pausing for lunch. 6/13/25 dwm
After two consecutive working Fridays (the first was still while working a four-day week due to Memorial Day, the second was because I worked all 5 days!), it was nice to have the day off.
We had some family things to attend to and the forecast rain didn't materialize, so I sneaked in a quick ride across the city and back. Ride 11 was 37 miles, averaging 16.8 mph.
The most notable thing about the ride was lunch, I stopped at Kwik Trip where I bought a deli sandwich of turkey and cheese with a small chocolate milk. It was the only stop on the ride.
The rest of Friday was spent running errands. It's been a good week, the next one will be underway when you read this. As always, thanks for reading!
