Mother's Day

L to R: Mom, Dad, G &G Mossner, G & G Schempp late 70s
Happy Mother's Day! It's the day to celebrate moms, grandmas, and great grandmas.

Maybe yours are no longer with you but live in your memory and in the legacy they gave you

My mom knew how to work and how to organize; she was an active volunteer at church and in the community. During my childhood, she was a seamstress for what seemed like dozens of people.

She didn't joke much and I tried not to upset her but we had good times together.

I was probably in fourth or fifth grade when we would have ice cream cones while watching Match Game on TV in the middle of a summer afternoon.

Her mom, my Grandma Schempp seemed more serious. She was an amazing baker and cook; I loved  it when she made fresh bread and especially loved it when she made hot and fresh cinnamon dinner rolls.

My other Grandma, dad's mom, was more fun. I think my love of sports came from her. On summer evenings, she would listen to her transistor radio to see how her St. Louis Cardinals were doing. In the winter, she was in front of the TV if the Bradley Braves were playing basketball. She would come along when Grandpa Mossner took me fishing.

Those personality traits had a lot to do with how they grew up. Mom grew up on a farm in northern Minnesota where everyone worked to put food on the table. There wasn't much time for fun.

My wife and the mother of my children has been a great mom.

She is an excellent cook and fantastic baker with a knack for coming up with tasty creations, especially on the night before payday.

When we lived in central Wisconsin I worked for what is now known as Thrivent as a representative serving clients by helping meet their goals with insurance and investments. It was a good job but it meant a lot of nights I didn't get home until well after 9.

On weekends, I frequently visited churches where I had clients and it was on her to keep two rambunctious kids in line while I was working as an insurance salesman instead of as a father.

Those boys in the picture are grown men now and doing well on their own thanks to their mom.

Happy Mother's Day to the moms in my life,  I hope you enjoy the day if you are celebrating your mother or being celebrated as a mom; it is much deserved!
