My Week that Was - April 5

Saturday morning I finally used the Christmas gift card from Duluth Trading Company at their outlet store in Belleville.

There are deals to find at the outlet, so we go there a few times each year. I came out with two 'wicking' t-shirts and a pair of walking shorts. I like the t-shirts for workouts and they are comfortable for any occasion.

In addition to the clothes, I stopped at Costco to pick up a case of protein shakes and at Kwik Trip for gas and two boxes of ice cream.  Each container was 1.5 quarts.

Speaking of ice cream, is that happening where you live? Once upon a time, maybe two years ago, you could purchase ice cream by the scoop, pint, half-gallon, and gallon. Similar to cereal and other grocery items, the prices stayed the same (or close to it) while packages shrank.

I planned to enjoy the Brewers at Yankee game Saturday afternoon, but watched the Yankees hit the first three pitches out of the park and a fourth one a few batters later. The Crew put a few runs on the board to make it interesting, then New York turned out the lights, eventually beating the Brewers 20 - 9!

As I walked out the door Sunday morning, heading to the gym, it was starting to sprinkle while thunder rumbled and flashes of lightening lit up the sky. The rain picked up as I got to the gym making it sound like a dozen snare drums were getting a workout from young drummers. The rain was out of the area by the time I was returned home.

On election day, I was fourth in line but first to drop my ballot in the box. The machine is set to receive a flat paper fed through a computer scanner. The first time I fed it into the machine it went in partially then reversed. I was told to try another way, I did and it came out. Then the inspector tried and the same thing happened. On her next try it went in the machine but failed to drop in the box.

That's when she got out her key to move the machine and then was able to get my ballot into the box. By that time there were 10 people lined up to drop in their ballots. As I left, it was good to see a steady stream of voters heading home from the polls.

Thursday I was working at my computer when I noticed a smoke smell in the office. That's not typical. After a minute I decided to investigate to make sure everything was OK.

I ran into a resident, asked if they smelled smoke, and they replied, "yes, it's from the controlled burn."

That's when I remembered hearing last week that if we had rain to make things less dangerous, the company we had taking care of the burn would use fire to remove several brush piles. The company will come back to burn sections of the nature preserve to remove invasive species to give native plants a chance.

Friday was an administrative kind of day with letters to get out, invitations to refine, and a mid-year appeal to write. When I got home we headed out for supper, where we enjoyed eating at The Grumpy Troll.

The first week of April is finished, we survived the spring general election, and flowers are beginning to emerge from the ground... have a great week!
