Home Work

March 6th is No Homework Day, started by Thomas and Ruth Roy to help students focus on things other than getting homework done.

My experience is that homework has a purpose and it's important for us to learn the responsibility of getting an assignment done on time and correctly. There can be too much homework and a point of diminishing returns when students become overwhelmed but assigned appropriately it can help students grow.

In college, one class I took, Psychology 101, was a 'go at your own pace' situation where I was able to read ahead and take chapter tests when I wanted. That allowed me to get a three credit class out of the way during the first two weeks of the semester so I could concentrate on other classes.

Home work isn't just for school. Many jobs require employees to keep up with continuing education courses. To maintain my Certified Fund Raising Executive credential, I need 45-hours of classes every three years in addition to meeting other milestones. In addition, depending on the job, Oakwood employees have a variety of computer courses that range from 15 to 45 minutes to watch before taking a short quiz which requires an 80% passing score.

The courses aren't exactly homework but to finish all the courses before the December 31 deadline, there are times we might need to work after hours, but not today, because it's no homework day.
