A snowy day in Verona. 1/9/2024 dwm |
Winter arrived while most of us were sleeping, it was twenty minutes past three when it arrived.
It will be interesting to see what winter has for us. We had January temperatures in mid-November but no snow in any part of it.
Last year we had a number of 4 to 6-inch snowfalls but almost every time it warmed up enough to melt it before the next snow.
While the winter solstice marks the year's longest night, it means more daylight is coming, a few seconds at a time.
We moved back to Wisconsin because we missed winter. While we didn't live in the south, Indianapolis winters didn't get a lot of measurable snow. We see more now but it's nothing like what I remember growing up, of course, that's fifty years ago.
Madison Solstice
The sun is low
Ceding time in the sky.
Eight hours
Fifty-nine minutes
Forty-four seconds.
The shortest day
It gains 3 seconds
Then 8 more after
It's all on the way
To a much longer day
It won't come too soon,
We'll wait until June.
