Trip 38 - 1,500

On the Yahara Trail. 10/25/24 dwm

You may wonder what happened to trip 37... well, I'm not sure. At some point, I miscounted. When I sat down to write this post, I counted again and came up with 37 days of rides before this final trip, which is the 38th.

It's been a remarkable weather year. The ride last Friday was sunny and in the mid-50s. My first ride was March 2, I had three more rides before the end of April, then took at least one ride nearly every weekend from May through October.

I had the day off October 25. I had an appointment with the Red Cross at 8:30, then after my wife and I grabbed a bite to ear, it was time to ride. All I needed to reach 1,500 miles was 37 more; it covered familiar ground, the Military Ridge, Capital City, and Yahara River trails.

That route was part of quite a few rides because those trails cross the south side of Madison while connecting to other areas.

While the leaves were past their peak, there was still plenty of color for the last weekend in October.

After pumping air into both tires, I put on my helmet and road away. Six-tenths of a mile from home, I realized I didn't have water with me, so I headed back to grab my bottle. That helped because I needed more miles than I would get staying on the trails. By starting, then reversing course to start again, I got an extra 1.2 miles on the computer.

When I arrived in McFarland, I went east on Siggelkow road 2.2 miles, then turned back. When I pedaled on to the Yahara boardwalk, I was just over 21 miles with 16 to go, that would get me 37.

This familiar stretch has its own set of personal landmarks. There is a culvert that keeps water off the path marking it's 10-miles to home. At the west end of the bike bridge over Fish Hatchery Road, it's down to 8.

After the final turn, I stopped in front of the garage at 37.2 miles for the day and 1,500 for the year, time to put the bike away.
