Marvelous Munising

Autumn in the U.P. 10/5/24 dwm
The first stop on our trip was Munising, Michigan. When we arrived we looked for the lights that were the reason for the trip, then checked into our motel before seeing what we could of the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

The lighthouses in Christmas, Munising, and one covering the East Channel from Grand Island have their own blogs.

Munising Falls are located by the visitor center at the south end of the park. Actually, the falls were there first, the center placed near the beautiful natural attraction.

The walk to the falls is 800-feet and mostly flat. There are two other options to view the falls that require climbing stairs that are safe but not standard.

Wherever you decide to take in the beauty and the wonderful sound of water falling 50-feet before it travels down a stream to Lake Superior, you'll enjoy it and the peaceful experience.

It's a popular attraction and the amphitheater-like setting with the curved sandstone rocks creates it's own concert hall. Plan to spend quality time before checking out more of the park.

Elsewhere you can find the Miner's Castle (photo below left). It's the only rock formation in the park accessible by car. There is a parking lot near an overlook that provides a great view of the rock.

It previously had two turrets that gave it a castle-like appearance, but a rock-slide in 2006 sent one turret tumbling into the lake.

There was a steady stream of visitors taking pictures of the natural beauty, visits began a long time ago, starting with original native tribes and continued by an Englishman searching for minerals in 1771. His team didn't find any minerals.

We didn't take the cruise to see the Pictured Rock bluffs that stretch between Munising and Grand Marais, that will wait for a future trip.

There are plenty of hiking trails and ATV/UTV paths for guests to explore and a number of camping opportunities as well.
