Sandwich Month

I wonder what John Montagu would say about August being recognized as National Sandwich month.

You might wonder who John Montagu is, well, he was the fourth Earl of Sandwich, the man credited with creating his namesake.

The Earl wanted his cook to make something he could hold with one hand while gambling. The guy running his kitchen put meat between two pieces of bread in 1762.

Ol' John liked his sandwich so much it became part of his regular diet. Others heard about the convenient way to eat while gambling or doing some other activity. In 18th century terms, it went viral.

There are lots of great sandwiches. Some of the best come after holiday dinners. I think many people join me in thinking the post-Thanksgiving dinner turkey sandwich is better than the freshly carved bird.

An almost liquid grilled cheese sandwich is one of my favorites, especially in cool or cold weather. In the summer, give me a Bacon-Lettuce-and-Tomato, on toast, please. On bike rides or as comfort food, you can't go wrong with a peanut butter and jelly sammich.

Not as good as home-made but not bad. 6/14/24 dwm
I don't go for this one anymore, but I recall making ketchup and mustard sandwiches when I was a kid growing up on Forest Park Boulevard (see the house here).

When mom didn't let me make my own, I remember her making me bologna or tuna sandwiches. I wasn't a fan of bologna, if tuna was on buttered toast, I liked it.

The other category is hot sandwiches - I don't consider hot dogs or brats as sandwiches, they are examples of ballpark food - my favorites start with hamburgers, Cubans, and pulled pork.

As important as the sandwich's interior is what holds it together. While toast or bread will do for sandwiches made with leftovers or cold ingredients; a bun, roll, or croissant (depending on what's inside) can take a nice lunch to the next level.

You've got 31 days to celebrate National Sandwich Month - can you come up one for each day of the month?  Good luck!
