Twisters

We saw Twisters Friday afternoon.

My wife could hardly wait. That in itself is odd because she doesn't like storms. She likes movies and TV shows on the subject. The 1996 film, Twister, is one of her favorites.

I don't know if Helen Hunt was asked to be in this movie but it would have been a nice touch. Dorothy appears, looking old and battered, (more about Dorothy at end of blog), but that was the only Easter egg or reference to the first movie I saw.

There is another reference to the first movie, except Addy, plays the Bill Harding role from the first film (played by Bill Paxton) and Tyler Owens' counterpart was more like Hunt's Dr. Jo Harding.

By the way, Addy is played by Kiernan Shipka who first gained fame as Sally Draper in the AMC series Mad Men.

The effects are impressive and the movie devastation a reminder of what these storms can do and what they might do in the future.

If you saw the original Twister on the big screen, you've seen Twisters. It's a fun movie, a good date night flick, worth spending money on tickets and a bucket of popcorn. I just can't say it's better than the first one.

Dorothy was the name of the barrel holding the 'flying meters' Dr Jo Harding made to map tornadoes in Twister. It served the same purpose in the latest one.

The development seemingly beyond the reach of Addy's character is how to protect people from damaging storms. After an early failure, the movie's final moments provide a glimpse of a way (however unlikely it might be) that we might employ someday to tame tornadoes.
