Home Working

Working from home 4/6/2020 dwm
Working from home has been a thing since work began. The first jobs were mostly agricultural; farmers almost always work from home.

The industrial age, factories, and assembly lines meant most people had to go-to-work. Craftsmen and women can work from a home studio or shop; increasingly almost everybody can work remotely.

I started working from home in mid-March 2020 when Covid-19 forced a lot of us to use the home Ethernet cable or Wi-Fi with a VPN connection to work and talk with colleagues.

For me, working from home was much, much better than not working. But there were things I missed. Zoom calls made office meetings possible, which was great, but they didn't generate the same conversations and brain-storms you get talking in the same room. I was productive at home but there was something missing.

When Covid-19 restrictions started to lift in 2021, I was glad to get back to the office. One thing we couldn't do from home was print letters which meant going to an empty office once a week to print, sign, stuff, seal, and send them.

It was wonderful to meet with people in person again, even if we couldn't shake hands, wore masks, and sat six-feet apart.

It's wonderful technology makes it possible for people to be in the same office while in different parts of the world at the same time. One office colleagues works 1,100 miles away, she is so valuable I'm thrilled she is still on the team while able to live where she wants.

For her, my son and thousands, if not, millions of others, I wish them the happiest National Work from Home Day.
