My Week that Was - May 11

Saturday morning we went to Dodgeville for breakfast at their Country Kitchen restaurant.

It's now called Cafe Kitchen but its menu has stayed the same. Country Kitchen is a limited chain with 20 locations across the United States.

I had a waffle, which was delicious with a crisp exterior and soft inside. There used to be more Country Kitchens around the Midwest, as I recall, and I've always liked them.

The reason for the trip was to check the Farm and Fleet store there which was celebrating a grand re-opening. We knew it was a different celebration when there were people directing traffic in the parking lot.  As we cruised the store, it was amazing to see how many employees were on hand. Employees from other stores in south Wisconsin must have been called on to help out. All the registers were staffed and there were 2 - 4 employees in every aisle, ready to help. We found a couple good deals, then got in a long line which moved us quickly to the cashier.

Growing up in Janesville, Farm & Fleet was 'our' store because it started there in 1955. It now has 45 stores in 4 states.  My best friend's dad drove a truck for Farm & Fleet.  It started by providing goods and services to Ag-businesses, including farms, and companies with fleets of trucks. It continues to serve those audiences plus homeowners with nearly everything you need.

On the way home from Dodgeville, we stopped at the Hyde Mill to grab a few pictures. It's a pretty spot, a dam and mill tucked into the side of a hill ready to harness the water's power for grinding wheat, oats, and barley. On this visit, the owner was working on the water wheel while recent rains pushed a lot of water over the dam.

Sunday after church, I got in a second ride for the weekend, going 25 miles down the Military Ridge and Cannonball paths to Lake Monona and back.

Crab-apple blossoms. 5/3/24 dwm
Monday was busy with invitations to prepare and a mailing to finish; there were also videos to work on, a presentation to prepare, and an article to write, plus there were the weekly phone calls to make.

Last week when my office carpet was cleaned, I moved as many items out of the way as possible, including the printer. Afterwards, I plugged it in, but it wouldn't print.

Wednesday our information technology person came over to check it out and quickly solved the problem. There were two places to connect the printer. One came up as 'connected' on the printer while the other didn't. As it turns out, I didn't wait long enough for the signal to come through on the second plug because it was the correct one.

Trillium blooming at Oakwood. 5/8/24 dwm
Oakwood's two campuses are known for their beauty and there may not be a better time than spring to see it on display.

I heard Tuesday that more trillium than usual was blooming in the nature preserve and in neighboring woods. I didn't have my preferred camera along but was able to get a few shots of the brilliant, three-petal flower.

Friday I attended a funeral for a resident I'd known for 9 years. It was nice getting to meet one of his children and share some of my memories with him. My enduring memory is having lunch with the resident and a couple friends. It was a friendly bunch and a good feeling to be one of the guys at the table.

This was my first 5-day week in five weeks, while I've enjoyed the long weekends, it was nice to put a regular 40-hours in for a change.  I hope your next 7-day week is a good one!  Thanks for reading.
