Find a Penny

It's Lucky Penny day every May 23, so I hope you find several as you are out and about today. Since it is official, you might even bend over to pick up one!

The often-neglected coins are considered so cheap, many of us leave the pennies we get as change in a cup by the cash register.

Maybe that's why finding a penny is a harbinger of good fortune. You know the phrase, "Find a penny, pick it up, all the day you'll have good luck."

Pennies were inspired, according to NationalToday.com, by the Roman denarius and usually refers to the country's smallest coin denomination.

In a long-ago era, that predates me by a few years, shopping in  a 'Five and Dime store' meant a couple pennies would buy a couple pieces of candy.

I don't think that happens anymore. The most recent I saw candy on sale for a penny, it was an individual mini Tootsie Roll.

Our world is quickly becoming cash-less, which puts coins and paper money on the endangered list, but I, for one, don't like using my debit card for everything, especially small purchase like my morning soda or an ice cream treat.  If I use cash, I follow after my dad, who would give exact change when possible, or hand someone a five dollar bill, two quarters, and three pennies if something rang up for $3.53.

Unfortunately, that can sometimes present a challenge of 'story-problem' proportions. Hopefully that clerk quickly finds a penny to insure their own lucky day!
