Pretzel Sunday

This is a new 'holiday' on me, although its roots trace back to the 18th century, it's Pretzel Sunday.

According to NationalToday.com, the fourth Sunday in Lent is Pretzel Sunday. The seemingly natural connection between church and pretzels is that the shape evokes two arms and their hands in prayer with three holes representing the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

The tradition is that young men would present a pretzel to a young lady to show his affection. If she agrees in turn, she gives him a decorated chocolate egg on Easter. If not, she gives the guy an empty basket.

Since 2024 is a leap year, it should be noted that in leap years, women can extend the pretzel to a young man, hoping to receive an egg instead of a basket.

I'd not heard of this before coming across it while looking for a blog topic, and the word pretzel caught my eye because I've grown to like pretzels over the last 10 to 20 years.

I'm a much bigger fan of fresh, soft pretzels with hot butter brushed over salt sprinkled on the delicious bread. The hard pretzels are OK, a nice salty snack to accompany a cold beverage.

If there is someone in your life you've not yet got up the nerve to express your intentions, today is your day to make or buy a pretzel and give it to your true love. After explaining the tradition to him or her, sit back a few weeks to see if you get a chocolate egg or left holding a basket.
