Badgers Near the Finish

In mid-January, the Wisconsin men's basketball team seemed like a force to be reckoned with; they were reeling coming into Tuesday's game at home with Maryland, losing five of the last six.

While they held on to beat Maryland for two of their last three, this Wisconsin team doesn't look like the squad that won 12 of 13 from November 17 to January 26.

Excited fans dreamed of watching the Badgers advance to the Sweet Sixteen or Elite Eight if things fell their way.  But down the stretch their defense lost some of its starch.

When the offense moves the ball around the court, making sure to pass into the lane or near the basket, they play smoother than when individuals fire quick shots without looking for an open teammate.

In the post-season, games are decided by match-ups, and that's where the Badgers should have an advantage with a veteran, experienced team.

The team is missing a crucial reserve player, Kamari McGee, due to injury. He wouldn't solve all the problems, but he provided a shot of energy and intensity during games early in the season. The team hasn't indicted if he might return.

The Badger men's hockey team has surprised this season. Last year UW finished last in the B1G hockey standings. The long-time coach was fired and a replacement found. This season, Wisconsin is near the top of the standings.

It's nice to see the men playing well. The past few seasons, attendance plummeted because of the team's poor performance.

The best Wisconsin winter team is women's hockey. After winning their 7th championship in 2023, the Mark Johnson led team is positioned to defend their title.

I haven't made it to any games in-person this season but pay close attention to all three teams. I'd love to see the Badger basketball team make another run at the Final Four but the two hockey teams have a better opportunity to be among the last four teams competing.  Between the men and women's hockey teams, I'll put my money on the Badger women to bring home an eighth trophy.

Go Badgers!
