My Week that Was - November 11

Presenting the colors. 10/31/2015

The weekend went well.  Most of Saturday was spent waiting for that evening's performance on Oakwood's west campus.  I wasn't particularly nervous, I was ready to get on with it.

From backstage it was impossible to hear what was happening in the auditorium, thankfully our stage director had us ready to go when it was time to go on stage.

The after-party was fun, getting to joke around and recount what just happened.  Practicing and performing together is a great way to get close, or closer, to people in ways that only happen through a shared experience.

Monday I had a different shared experience with thousands of Milwaukee Brewer fans.  Long-time manager and former player, Craig Counsell, left Milwaukee to become the manager of the division rival Chicago Cubs.

Just one day later, the news about Counsell was still bothersome.  The next thing will be trying to figure out who takes his place and what will the team be like under new leadership.  I'm anxious to see what happens next.

It's Veteran's Day, a day to honor the men and women who served our country.  It may be a cliche but the truth behind the phrase, freedom isn't free applies to the rights and privileges we enjoy living in the United States of America.  The messy state of politics showcases different points of view and ideas on how we resolve our issues.  That's not easy but we would be wise to follow the lead of the military who set aside differences to reach an objective.

Last Wednesday was the first day of Oakwood's annual Health & Benefits fair which provides time for staff to learn about insurance options in the new year.  I've been part of that through the Foundation because one option for employees is becoming a donor themselves.  More than 15% of the staff give through payroll deduction.  I'm available to answer questions and make them aware of the many benefits available through donor support.

You may have meetings you regularly attend; one of mine is the quarterly foundation board meetings.  It was a busy and productive session Thursday thanks to the hard-working volunteers who serve on it.  It was the culmination of a grant process that stretches more than 3 months.

The rest of Thursday was spent on our east campus.  It was nice connecting with co-workers I'd not seen in a while and meet newer employees.  In the past you could expect most exhibitors to have some kind of treat on the tables.  Times have changed, give-a-ways this year included pizza cutters, ice scrapers, mini flashlights, lip balm, tissues, and chocolate kisses.  You may have guessed, I was the guy with the candy.

Friday I printed, signed, stuffed, and sealed thank you letters; worked on an article announcing the 2024 grants; and had a donor visit in the afternoon.

It was a hectic, I am ready for the week-end. have a great week!
