Michigan Lights - Second Shot - South Haven

The Grand Haven lighthouse. 9/23/2023 dwm

We visited the light in South Haven after starting our mini-lighthouse tour in Grand Haven.  It was six years and five days since our first visit.

On that first trip visiting lights time was important because there were a lot of lights we planned to see each day.

This time around, with just two lights, I took the time to get pictures looking downstream toward Lake Michigan from a sidewalk next to the river at least a quarter of a mile away.  Then, as I walked to the light I paused to get shots from a variety of angles.

Much closer
It was early fall when we stopped in South Haven.  Not many of the trees were showing their colors but one that was hung over the walk leading to the light.  The bright red of the light tower was set off by the blue of the sky and lake plus the red, yellow, and orange of the overhanging maple tree.

It was a spectacular Saturday morning but surprisingly few people were on the long concrete pier. It worked for me, allowing me to get shots from a variety of angles.

This is the second light at South Haven, replacing a wood tower built in 1872 in 1903.  The original catwalk survives, one of four still leading to Michigan lighthouses.

Our visit was perfectly timed with steady boat traffic, including several sail boats that turned left at the end of the pier heading southwest into the big lake.  Fishing boats tended to head north.

Here are some of my favorite shots from the most recent visit to South Haven, Michigan.
