My Week that Was - September 30

At the end of last week, we traveled to Michigan for the funeral of an extended member of the family.

It was a sad occasion, the grief brightened by the promise of salvation and eternity in heaven.

While we spent a couple days on the west side of Michigan, there was time to enjoy some of the last of summer weather near the big lake.

I've wanted to re-take pictures of a few lighthouses on our first Michigan lighthouse trip and this provided it.

I took a lot more pictures this time than I did back in 2017.  Individual blogs about the second-takes coming soon.

We headed home Saturday, meaning no bike ride to start this week, instead we took our time along the west coast of Michigan going only half the distance home with a relaxing overnight near the mid-point of the trip.  That made for a more relaxing return trip, which ended mid-morning Sunday.

Despite the travel, I was able to watch the Badgers, thanks to their unusual Friday night game in West Lafayette, Indiana. It wasn't always pretty but Wisconsin looked to have found their footing in the fourth game of the season and first in conference play.  They get a week off before their next contest.

We were home in time for Green Bay's home-opener (surprised?).  For three quarters, the Packers looked like a young, mistake-prone unit that was missing too many front-line players.  In the fourth stanza, it's possible we saw Jordan Love's coming-out-party as he led three scoring drives that erased a 17 - 0 deficit.  His career will determine if this was the start of a stellar career or just a glimpse of unfulfilled greatness.

Monday it was time to deliver mail to campus residents for the annual Employee Appreciation fund.  They've been especially generous to staff the past few years and it appears this year will continue that trend.

Tuesday, I took the afternoon off and traveled to Milwaukee with our youngest son to see the Brewers.

Coming off an exciting win Sunday by the Packers there was a lot of hope in the air for the Brew Crew.  Hope found a way, even in defeat as the Cubs lost, handing the Brewers a Division crown.

Wednesday morning was tough, rolling out of bed five hours after getting in it, but the day at work was OK and I recovered some sleep the next evening.

The big Green Bay win Sunday fueled a lot of excitement for Thursday night's home game with Detroit but that excitement, stoked with an early interception of the Lions quarterback, quickly died as our new division rival put a hurting on the men in green and gold.  The team again looked young and mistake-prone.  I'm still more hopeful than not for the Packers as there are plenty of glimpses of potential even during bad stretches.

Friday brought the week to a close with a lot in the 'out' tray and excitement building for the Milwaukee Brewer post-season and the Milwaukee Bucks upcoming season because the team acquired superstar Damian Lillard to play with Giannis the next few years.  The Bucks have been good, the roster now makes them the favorite to win it all.  That will be fun.

It's a great time to love Wisconsin sports - most of the major Badger sports are on the uptick or near the top of their games (women's volleyball and hockey, football, men's basketball and hockey), Brewers, Marquette men's basketball, Bucks, and Packers).  Let's go Sports - have a great week!
