My Week that Was - September 16

The Donald Rock. 9/9/23 dwm
The week started with a ride around southwest Dane County, traveling mostly on roads I've not done with my bike and several I've not been on at all.  It was fun.

After the ride and cleaning up, it was time for something else I enjoy, spectator sports!  Wisconsin didn't play until Saturday evening but I'll watch almost any college football game and was interested to see how the Brewers would fare in their second game playing the New York Yankees.

The Badgers weren't up to the challenge playing the Cougars of Washington State.  I'm not sure they could have won playing at their best but they were a long way from that.  The coach wasn't saying the team was ready for prime time; he certainly has coaching points before the third and final non-conference game on the schedule.

The Brewers took two of three against the Yankees and nearly swept New York.  Corbin Burnes and Devin Williams didn't allow a hit for nine innings which stretched into the tenth; unfortunately the Crew couldn't score a run and they fell in 13 innings, going home with a 3 game lead over the Chicago Cubs.

Green Bay was a pleasant surprise as the defense was stout through most of the game and the offense took advantage of opportunities the Chicago Bears gave them.  It was a solid road win and the ninth in a row over the Bears.  The Pack stays on the road, playing game two in Atlanta tomorrow at noon.

Sunday was the annual Madison Ironman race.  The cycling portion of the event loops twice through Verona, passing from mid to late morning to late in the afternoon.  Since we moved here, most years I plant a chair along the road and take pictures of the passing athletes.

This time I walked farther, going over a short hill to get a different backdrop for the photos.  Some of my favorites are at the end of this post.

Monday morning was wet thanks to overnight rains that were drizzling to a stop around 5 am.  We didn't get a downpour but it was the most we've had in 28 days.

Just over 70 applications were made requesting grants for a variety of projects using donor gifts.  There are some interesting ideas and fascinating projects in addition to donor support for internships, the nature preserve, and life enrichment programs.

It's a process to review the requests and find the best opportunities that will improve the lives of residents and Oakwood's two campuses.

Last night we went to Red Robin for dinner then afterward went to a bait shop near Lake Monona.  Well, that's not the full story, the place is called Monona Bait and Ice Cream (photo lower right).

You won't find basic ice cream; it sells ice cream and custard from Babcock Hall at the University of Wisconsin.  It's home to the dairy program part of UW College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.  My favorite flavor from Babcock is the Orange Custard Chocolate Chip.

It's like an orange creamsicle with chocolaty chips.  It may not sound that great but if you try it you'll love it too.

The work week ended with a sense of order for the grant applications.  A final review is planned, then it's on to the Board of Directors.

It was a good week for the Milwaukee Brewers who increased their lead over the Cubs with two weeks left in the season.

The Packers took care of the Bears and elevated hopes and expectations of their fan base.  We'll see what happens when they play a second straight road game in Atlanta.

And the Badgers return home after a somewhat shocking loss to Washington State looking to figure things out in the final non-conference game before starting B1G conference play next week.

The weather was beautiful all week.  There were hints of autumn in the breeze, it will come soon enough.  Enjoy your week!
