Road Trippin' - Spring Green

A theater in downtown Spring Green. 6/10/23 dwm
There are big reasons to drive to Spring Green, Wisconsin:  Frank Lloyd Wright's Taliesin; American Players Theater; and the House on the Rock.

The village of 16-hundred sits above the Wisconsin River.  During my first (of three) ride along the Wisconsin River I stayed overnight in Spring Green's River Valley high school gym.

Prior to the trip, I purchased a ticket to see Hamlet in the outdoor theater at American Players Theater.  It was lovely, I hadn't anticipated how tired I might be by that time with early starts and multiple 80-mile days before the day of the show.

I liked the town and how close the school was to a short strip of restaurants along US Highway 14 on the north side of town, where I enjoyed a concrete mixer and tenderloin at Culver's.  It was our last stop before riding into Prairie du Chien the next day and the end of the trip.

The small bookstore is a must stop. dwm
The big attractions add to the community's interesting main drag, Jefferson Street.

My wife is interested in the Country Sampler Quilt Shop which now also features items for people who cross-stitch, which makes even more of the store interesting.

Arcadia Books is a nice place to get lost between book shelves or relax in their coffeehouse.  A new restaurant is opening soon in the original Spring Green bank building.

I found a quiet spot in the shade on a building size parcel on the street that has a small stage and tables where people can relax with friends or a book and a beverage.

It's a great place to explore on foot because once you park, you are within steps of nearly ever store radiating from the intersection of Jefferson and Lexington.

East of town on highway 14 is Peck's Farm Market.  It opens early in the spring and has fresh produce and Wisconsin made products until late in autumn.  It's more than a store, it's also an attraction with things to do other than shop.

You could bike or try the parks along the Wisconsin River which is shallow in these parts with many sand bars waiting for people to enjoy by boat or on foot.

It's a quick 45-minute road trip for us; one of these times we promise to see Taliesin or the House on the Rock; I was at the 'House' as a kid but feel like I need at least one more visit.
