Memorial Day

Today used to be known as Decoration Day - a day families, friends, and neighborhoods cleared and cleaned graves of Civil War veterans at the local cemetery, frequently putting up flags or flowers.

It became Memorial Day in 1971, honoring soldiers, sailors, and airmen with no concern for which branch of the military or when they served their country.

You might acknowledge this day with a quiet moment of reflection, by attending a local program; decorating a grave; or applauding as veterans and families pass by during a parade.

USA Today puts the number of soldiers, sailors, and members of other branches who died in battle at more than 1-point 3 million people. More than half the total comes from the Civil War alone.

In an environment where people are frequently at each other's throats (figuratively) over their favorite presidential candidate or political opinion, the sacrifice and selflessness of the brave men and women serving our country can be lost in the noise.

This day and every day, let's think of our service men and women; their families; their sacrifice; and remember the men and women made the ultimate sacrifice defending our country.

Thank you.
