May the Fourth

Star Wars game in 2017.

One of the best promotions in Major League Baseball the last several years is Star Wars night.

Teams pay Disney, which owns the franchise, so teams can give Star Wars names to their players, flash movie graphics on the scoreboard, and have costumed movie characters walk around the stadium and even throw the ceremonial first pitch.

Today, May 4th, is Star Wars Day because May the fourth be with you is the Jedi phrase that lives throughout the movie's nine episodes and the almost countless number of additional films and streaming series set in the galaxy far, far away.

We've tried to make it every Brewer Star Wars night we can, paying a little more than the actual ticket price for our own piece of the movie's universe.

Milwaukee's Star Wars night this year is May 13th because the Brew Crew is on the road May 4.

Judging baseball promotions is tough. Bobble head give-a ways usually get the most interest from fans but shirt and hat give-a ways are popular too.

I loved Bat Day as a kid. Believe it or not, kids were handed baseball hats as they walked through the turnstiles for the game. I don't think anyone gives away full-size bats anymore.

Long ago baseballs were distributed, then came opening day in 1997 when 20 teams gave balls to fans coming through the gates. In Milwaukee so many balls were thrown on the field and at players the game had to be delayed at times. After that game future baseball giveaways happened as fans headed home.

Yoda t-shirts last year were given away at Star Wars night (photo below). Nice it was but not as good as a bobble head ball player.

Milwaukee is making up for that miscalculation this year with a Ueck Skywalker bobble head.

Wait for it I can't.

Today is a good time to wish your friends and people on the street, "May the fourth be with you." If someone greets you that way, you should say, "And also with you."
