Fat Tuesday

While a lot of folks love celebrating and enjoying Mardi Gras; the day after Fat Tuesday is reflective and restrained for the penitential church season of Lent.

For many Christians, Lent is a time where they choose to give up something special to focus on their Lord and a lot of people do that by giving up rich and fatty foods.

Today celebrates several foods:  pancakes, sticky buns, and Fasnacht.

Fasnacht means "the night before Lent begins" in German and is acknowledged with special less sweet doughnuts.

Pancakes are a practically a perfect food any time - potato pancakes were a frequent supper at my house as a kid and chocolate chip pancakes are still my favorite morning indulgence.

Maybe a better name for the day before Lent is Carb day because when you add the third creation celebrated today, the Sticky Bun.  Creators of the day trace the bun's history as coming to America from Germany in the 18th century known as schencken - which can also be known as caramel rolls, monkey bread, or cinnamon rolls.

Don't forget the Paczki, which are also available in big numbers today.  The polish doughnut has a sweet filling and usually covered with powedered sugar, icing or a sugary glaze.

If you take this day too seriously, it might take all six weeks of Lent to work them off.
