Sound of Silence

December 22 is "Be a Lover of Silence Day," which seems fitting given the amount of natural and artificial noise that's about to be unleashed.

Silence is welcome for moments of reflection: on the holiday; thinking of loved ones you miss; or while concentrating on shopping.

Silence is also helpful before the 'storm' of holiday chaos as you gather with office colleagues or are surrounded by extended family that includes quite a few folks you barely know.

This year it might be a moment to recognize Paul Simon.  He wrote Sounds of Silence and performed it with one-time musical partner Art Garfunkel.  While it's a beautiful song with compelling lyrics and catchy tune, the words are a warning how people can't or don't communicate with each other.

That lyrical warning was issued in 1963.  60 years later, the sound is practically screaming as we gaze at the screens (neon gods?) which surround us.

During the holiday season, let's make an effort at talking face to face to drown the sounds of silence.
